15 Life Transforming Ideas You Can Start Today

Photo: Peter Conlan/Unsplash
  1. Start a blog — Regardless of whether or not you want to be a writer, start a blog and practice your writing skills. Writing well is a superpower. Having a blog where you update the world on your thoughts, accomplishments, and ideas gives people who want to connect with you a chance to see who you are — employers, clients, and even friends. Writing teaches you how to think. The more you write, the more you understand yourself and the world you live in.
  2. Keep a Journal — I’ve had a simple journaling routine for years. Journaling helps you regulate your emotions, tame your monkey mind, discover your core values, and understand what you really want from your life. As my business and life have both grown and become more complicated, I’m starting to journal heavily. Keeping a constant eye on the way your mind works can work wonders for your life. Keep a journal for six months and watch your life transform.
  3. Invest in your community — Buy local meat and produce. Go to the events they post on fliers in coffee shops. Get little trinkets and pieces of art from local storefronts. Volunteer in your city or town. As the world becomes more global, become more focused on your area. You’ll feel more connected in an increasingly disconnected world. You’ll be able to invest in something you can see with your own eyes, which builds a sense of pride.
  4. Cut out all the damn sugar — Not saying you have to go keto or Atkins, but that sugar will most assuredly kill you if you’re not careful. If we were to all simply reduce our sugar intake, it would solve 95 percent of our health problems. If you reduce your sugar intake you’ll lose weight, feel more energetic, and you won’t have constant peaks and valleys of glucose spikes, which will help you perform better overall. Just trust me on this one.
  5. Start a side hustle — Even if you never want to own a business outright, starting a side hustle just has too many emotional advantages not to do it. You learn how to be adaptable. Your perception of what’s possible changes. If you get a few things right, you make extra money, which makes your life easier. You’ll learn more about yourself trying to get a project off the ground than almost any other activity.
  6. Get a hobby — Whereas you go into a side hustle with a “hobbyist” attitude, but to try to make money, a hobby is just something you do purely for joy. If you’re bored all the time, it’s because you are boring. Finding a hobby cures your own boredom and makes you more interesting at the same time. Plus, you have a refuge when the chaos of life clouds your mind with noise.
  7. Practice mindfulness — I’ve been meditating daily for five years. This, plus journaling, keeps me sane. It kept me sane when trying to turn my side project into a full-time gig drove me crazy. It kept me focused with enough energy and mental clarity to write daily. Over time, it has taught me how to identify which thoughts to trust and which not to. As you become a better observer of your own mind, you can process your emotions faster and more efficiently. Less monkey mind means more productivity, presence, and freedom.
  8. Break out of your shell and do something that scares you — Where do you feel stifled? Where do you feel like you’re not able to bring your full self to the world? Pretty much all problems are solved by tackling them head-on. No mystery to it at all. Make this your year to finally face those demons.
  9. Stop watching the news — The news will poison your mind and rot your soul if you let it. I’m extreme in my view of the media. I genuinely despise them and consider them nothing less than a giant propaganda arm built for the sole purpose of gaslighting you. The news, as a whole, is fake. You’re not being informed by watching it. It’s not an accurate depiction of reality. Avoid. Live your life and work on yourself while everyone else debates about politics and bathes in outrage.
  10. Accept your life — Here’s how you spend your life. You spend it wishing things were different. You constantly replay movies in your head of what you could’ve done differently. You’re also anxious about the future. But you’ll never be able to change until you accept your current lot in life, surrender to the moment, and do the work to change from that grounded perspective. On January 1st, take a deep breath, tell yourself “This is where I’m at” and then go.
  11. Start a morning routine — Yuck. Gross. Not another guru talking about morning routines. Look, don’t start a morning routine for the sake of it, but to achieve an end that matters to you — may be one of the other items on this list. I hate waking up early, but it served a useful purpose (writing) so I got used to it. Usually, your life is just too chaotic to get anything major done, which means the wee hours of the morning may be your only good option.
  12. Audit yourself — Part of the reason you fail to change? You’re not honest with yourself. You make rationalizations about why you’re at the place you’re currently at. I use journaling to audit myself and truly understand my strengths and weaknesses, what’s my responsibility and what isn’t, where I’m hiding and being dishonest with myself, and what it will actually require to change. Being honest with yourself sucks, is highly emotional, hurts your feelings, and makes you feel uncomfortable. But after that? You’re free.
  13. Watch Youtube videos on “how to do things” — Cooking, changing your oil, troubleshooting your computer, taking great photos, computer programming, starting a business, it doesn’t matter. It’s not so much the things you learn from watching how-to videos that will change your life. Rather, it’s your understanding that you can learn almost anything without “traditional education.” Most people who don’t think upward mobility is possible don’t understand this. Making that mental switch in your mind can change your life in tons of areas.
  14. Mentor someone — Regardless of how much you think you know, you know something that can help someone else. Teaching helps you increase your own knowledge. Guiding someone else in life gives you meaning. Whether you’re shooting instructional videos, writing content, or becoming a “big brother or sister,” helping someone who needs your help is a win-win for everyone.
  15. Get mentored/hire a coach — Coaching is a very nebulous field. There are some great coaches and some horrible coaches. Finding the right coach, though, can change your life. Coaches find all the gaps in your thinking, help you think bigger, simply the process of what you’re trying to learn, and help you get results faster. Technically, you could find all the information you need to change your life for free and do it on your own. But who does this? Basically no one. Getting a writing coach, fitness coach, life coach, whatever. Get some instruction and guidance. If your life isn’t where you want it to be, consider that…you might need some help.

2020.11.23 16:54 codiesanchez Email List Conversion to Grow: 10k new subscriber in 30 days - how we did it for $0

For the next 3 months all we are doing is growing our businesses email lists. Why? Increasingly I think that algorithms & platforms can't be trusted for our businesses to grow.

Ok, Why Grow Your Email/Newsletter?

IF YOU HAVE A BUSINESS OR LIKE EARNING MONEY…

Whether it's Facebook, Amazon, Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok, if you build on their platform, they own your followers - you don't. Going back to their inception, they have systematically been optimizing you to pay more, for fewer eyeballs. Anyone who has ever tried to sell on Amazon or run ads on Google or FB knows what we are talking about. Not to mention they have a pesky habit of ya know, disappearing, like Snapchat, MySpace, and even AOL IM for all you 90's babies.
So the ONLY place you have real control over is your website and your email list. It’s the kingdom no Zuckerberg, Amazon or Newsom can stage a coupe within.
That is why it’s imperative you figure out how to grow those you can email.
So anyway we broke down our exact process so hopefully it helps you scale fast as well:
I don’t profess to be a guru at this. Just relentlessly documenting the journey to growth: Here’s status as of last month:
So across the ecosystem with those and email lists for EEC (our VC fund) we’re sitting around 200k followers. Goal = 1 million.

BUT BEFORE WE START, ON DAY ONE WE WERE: Just our moms basically.

Good news, that changed.

So here's How I Got My First 10,000 Subscribers in 30 Days

My embarrassing (I failed and looked silly a lot) rearview mirror look into how I built my newsletter to 10,000 in 30 days.
Take, tweak and use for your own.

Day One: (No One Cares ‘Cept Me)

Day Two: 0 - 102 People Who Care

Day Three: 0 - 135 People Who Care

Day Four: 0 - 167 People Who Care

Day Five: 0 - 253

Day Six: 0 - 300+

Day Six: 0 - 421+

Day Seven: 0 - 422+ (shitty day not much growth)

Week 2: 0 - 1790+ (kicking into gear)

Week 3: 0 - 3800+ (2x growth of previous week)

Week 4: 0 - 11,000+ (Nailed it!)

Ooof, what a month.
Certainly was work, but my hope is people stop obsessing about ad spend and spammy ads and instead look at ways to grow organically as well.
GROW GETTERS: Breaks down the weekly how.
Love to hear anyone else's ideas or what works for you??

2020.11.23 16:27 AllModernRecipes If You Feel Unsure About The Future, You Don’t Need More Inspiration, You Need Better Principles

If You Feel Unsure About The Future, You Don’t Need More Inspiration, You Need Better Principles

Photo by Nicole Wolf on Unsplash
If you feel lost, or as though you don’t know where you want your life to go next, or worse, fear that everything you have built could come crashing down, you don’t need more inspiration. You don’t need more positive thinking. You do not need more Pinterest photos or aspirational quotes.
When you have money problems, you need money principles.
When you have relationship problems, you need relationship principles.
When you have work problems, you need work principles.
When you have life's problems, you need life principles.
More money does not solve money problems. Different relationships do not solve relationship problems. New work does not solve work problems. Your future life will not solve your life problems.
This is because money does not make you good with money. Love does not make you love yourself. Relationships don’t make you good at relationships. Work doesn’t make you good at your job, or capable of work/life balance.
Problems don’t inherently make you a stronger person unless you change and adapt. The variable here is you. The common denominator is whether or not you shift your foundational perspective on the world, and how you behave within it.
Let’s be very clear: Someone who makes $500K can be as serious in debt and struggling as someone who makes $50K, and in fact, this happens more often than you would ever think. People who make less money are required to learn how to manage it better, and people who make more think they can eschew principles because of the quantity they are attaining.
You can screw up your dream relationship just as quickly as you can a hookup because the way you relate to others is an issue with you, not something that shifts depending on whether or not you meet the most perfect person you never triggers or annoys you and relates to you with unconditional positive regard.
You can be just as unhappy in your ideal job, with your perfect hours, at your most desired pay rate, if you don’t know how to ration your time, or relate to others in your workplace, or move your career forward. People who are “living their dreams” and “following their passion” can be just as unhappy as people who are not.
If you don’t have principles, your life is not going to get better just because you envision and then try to create a new one. Those problems are only going to follow you, and get bigger as your life does.

The good things that happen to us in life are like a magnifier. They show us where we still need to grow. True love shows us to ourselves. Money shows us to ourselves. Dream jobs show us to ourselves. The good, the bad, the desperately-needs-to-change-right-now.

If you don’t have principles now, you won’t have them later. If you don’t have the money principle of living beneath your means, you won’t be able to do it when you have more money.
If you don’t have the relationship principle of not relying on others for your sense of self, it won’t magically resolve itself when you meet the “right person,” you’ll just sabotage that relationship, too.

What is the principle?

A principle is a fundamental truth that you can use to build the foundation of your life. A principle is not an opinion or a belief. A principle is a matter of cause and effect.
Principles can become personal guidelines.
Some examples of money principles are the following: keep overhead costs low, get out, and stay out of debt, live beneath your means, save for a rainy day.
Many financial experts advocate prioritizing debt repayment as the beginning of financial health. This is because one day of accrued interest probably won't impact you that much. But 20 years will, to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars, if not more.
In the same way, one day of gained interest in investments won’t make a big difference. But 20 years will, to an even more significant margin.

The point of having principles is that it shifts you from short-term survival to long-term thriving.

Most things in our lives are governed by principles. Stephen Covey explains this well:
Principles are a natural law like gravity. It’s different than a value. Values are subjective; principles are objective. Gravity… if you drop something, gravity controls.
What this means is that if we are committed to the principle of eating good food each day, we will inevitably reap the benefit of better or improved health. If we write a sentence each day, we will inevitably write a book. If we commit to paying off a portion of our debts each month, we will inevitably pay them off. If we invest consistently and wisely, we will eventually see a return.
Our lives are governed by principles, as Benjamin Hardy explains:
Most people cram for tests while in college. But can you cram if you’re a farmer? Can you forget to plant in the spring, slack-off all summer, and then work hard during the fall? Of course not. A farm is a natural system governed by principles. So are you. The law of the harvest is always in effect. What you plant, you must harvest. Furthermore, what you plant consistently overtime eventually yields a compounded or exponential harvest. You often don’t experience the consequences of your actions immediately, which can be deceiving. If you smoked one cigarette, you probably wouldn’t get cancer. If you spent $10 on coffee just one day, it probably wouldn’t affect your financial life. However, overtime, these habits have drastic outcomes. It turns out, $10 daily over 50 years at 5% compounding interest becomes $816,000.
When you make an investment, you don’t expect to see a return that day. In the same way, you can go to sleep feeling accomplished knowing that you chipped away at your future, just by adhering to your principles.
Little things, done repeatedly and over time, become the big things.

Why is inspiration ineffective here?

Inspiration can be misleading. Big dreams not backed by strategized plans are big flops waiting to happen.
Inspiration means you take a feeling and elaborate on it. You allow your mind to wander, you piece together pretty pictures and create an image of how you’d like your life to feel.
Principles are boring. They aren’t inspiring. They are the laws of nature.
Principles are not immediately gratifying.
They do not make us feel better right away.
That’s why we often reach for inspiration, but find it to be ineffective. This is because we get our minds and hearts set on a vague idea of what we think we want, without ever really evaluating whether or not we want to engage in the daily work and effort it would take to get there.
When we don’t pair inspiration with the principles it takes to achieve those dreams, we become more lost and disappointed than ever before.

How do I start developing my own principles?

Nobody is born with excellent principles, they are something that you learn.
However, there are many different principles in life, and really, some may contradict one another. That’s why it’s important to adopt your own, that fits your goals and your life.
Begin with this:
  • What do you value?
  • What do you want to experience in your life?
  • What makes you uneasy or gives you anxiety?
The answers could be something like this:
I value relationships, and so by principle, I am going to prioritize them when given the opportunity. Alternatively, by principle, I value honest and positive relationships, so I’m not going to be in dating limbo anymore, unless someone commits within a reasonable amount of time, I will regard their hesitation as a “no.”
Perhaps you value financial freedom, and so by principle, you are going to put your extra cash toward repaying debt or building savings or investments. Perhaps you value travel and freedom, and so by principle, you are going to start working for yourself and always prioritize being able to work remotely or make your own schedule.
When you are clear on what your principles are, you can build your life from a really genuine, healthy place. You can start working toward goals that support what you do and do not want to experience, that will make you the calmest and happiest version of yourself.
A good life is built from the inside out and is based on a foundation of self-conduct and prioritization. It’s not as dreamy as a vision board, but it’s a lot more effective.

HUMANS OF WING CHUN: CECIL (3/3)

2020.11.23 12:30 Same-Calligrapher-72 THINGS TO REMEMBER IN OFFICE HOURS

The main day at your new position might be among the most essential and maybe distressing of your profession. "The vast majority of us recollect our first days at each specific employment due to the increased strain to intrigue”. Beginnings are what matters the most and hence fourmost important too. With the start of work and the start of a new social life, we all grew so rapid. And with time every individual gets busy and his social life covers the personal life and makes it not even a half. The most weird part which is a positive side nowadays is that no employee is treated like an outsider or a member of a social family.
📷
Some of the tips to remember about the things in these office hours can be questioning and answering the colleagues and team members about your main objective, preparing an elevation patch could be a good idea too, showing up early but entering the building on time to mark your personality regarding timings and all, smile, relax and what more. These are some ways to create an image of respect and dignity. Apart from these tips, you can also surprise your colleagues on their birthdays with a gift for them.
📷
Through Geek Monkey, you can easily get corporate gifts for your colleagues to strengthen your bond with them while at work. It’s just a way to compliment them in a good way and also their gesture towards you. Its collection says it all and will define it completely through their quality products with pocket-friendly prices.
The exact opposite thing to recall is that while the day at a new position is significant, you shouldn't be excessively hard on yourself in the event that it doesn't go easily. In the workplace office, your colleagues regularly represent the best danger to shielding you from getting some genuine, heads-down work done. They drop by your work area, connect with you in discussion, and welcome you to lunch. The social advantages of a working environment are certainly ideal to have, however they can turn into a test in case you're quickly drawn offtrack.

Hi all,
This is probably really simple but I am unable to find the mentioned option to upload a custom background for lists. I am running the setup in docker without any special configuration (v0.15.0+21-ae6144c042). According to the documentation this should be enabled by default.
